Yes, that puzzle uses a feature from the latest version.
Given that the install failed, I don't think this is an issue with your internet connection.
Does the log file say anything when you try and update the old version?

The log file is attached Jeff.
bump for this - also may be a very dumb question would it be different if you downloaded the new client from the website then installed it? May write over things.. but then foldit wouldn't be hogging your CPU
Can you give me the path where Foldit is installed? (i.e. C:\Program Files\Foldit, or wherever it is installed on your system)
The path is
"C:\Program Files\foldit\foldit.exe"
Also, I HAVE been able to download the latest developer client today by changing the update_group to beta in the options.txt file, but changing it back to main I still cannot download the main release. Strange ?!
Good to hear. I'm still not sure what was causing the problem. It seemed like a rather odd bug.
Updated beta and main - no troubles.
Win7 64bit.
I uninstalled foldit today then started again from scratch using the download on the main page of the website.
The download hung at 6.3Mb.
However, I then PAUSED the download and restarted it and managed to get a few more Mb downloaded before it once again hung. I repeated the procedure and eventually managed to get all 23.8 Mb of download.
If this is happening to potential new players I can't imagine how many people foldit is losing in the process.

Ughh !
Having downloaded the foldit client and started again, I ran the programme and it started to update ! And guess what…it has hung again on the update. Why is the downloadable version on the main website page not the latest version ?
Currently cannot use foldit.
The downloadable version on the main page is updated less frequently. It is intended to just be a reasonably recent starting point from which you update. I could try posting the installer again, however since it didn't help last time, I don't think it would do anything.
We need more information in order to diagnose this problem. There's just not enough to go on.
