Can't join group while group status is pending

If the group status of an account is currently pending, joining another (open) group does not work. There is no error message ("You are now a member of " is shown) but the group status stays " (pending)".

Welcome to the group "Go Science". The foldit client's group chat has been broken for quite awhile. Most of us are using an external IRC client to connect to the group chat. This problem has made it very difficult to chat with all the new members that have joined in the last month or so. I'm hoping that the developers can get it fixed soon.

P.S. - beta_helix/kxu, is anyone making any progress on our foldit client group's chat problem?
