Can't log on

Hi,

I have what sounds like the same problem as Chaise Murphy.

When I run Foldit, the first screen is "Contacting server to check for updates", but it doesn't seem to do anything - neither does it return an error message.

When I tried to create an account in Foldit, it gives me an error message:
"Error creating account: couldn't connect to server:Error while fetching https://fold.it/portal/new_acct:"

When I created an account on the fold.it website, and later tried to log on from within the Foldit application, it gave me a similar error message:
"couldn't connect to server:Error while fetching https://fold.it/portal/comm/whoami_csv:"

I'm a WinXP user. Not using a proxy. I am in Beijing, China - I'm not sure if that affects anything.

Because of the wired article there were very many new users. Perhaps the server was just overloaded. You should try again.

I've tried many times over the last few days - and yes, I'm one of the users who joined after reading about it on Wired! - I have been continually receiving the same problem - is there perhaps another reason why it's not working?

If it is that the server is overloaded, are there any plans to expand capacity to accommodate this surge in interest? I'm quite eager to try something beyond the intro puzzles, but can't get any updates…

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and I hope someone will have time to address this. The idea of harnessing the power of the game format, community brainpower and competition is fantastic, and the prospect of this community contributing to the body of knowledge on protein folding and related problems in the world is very exciting to me.

I would hardly call this issue resolved. Also see my comments in bug #200-36. DNS resolves the url just fine and manually accessing the URLs displayed in log.txt works fine and fast. Still, the Foldit GUI keeps on dumping the same old DNS error.

I like the game and want to do more than just the intro puzzles, however, this problem is keeping me from playing it.

This looks like a networking misconfiguration on your machine, not a server issue. Please let me know if it is still happening, and if so, whether it works for you from a different machine.
