I had the chat open today after long silence.
This just after installing the latest update released today.
After jflat rebooted the chat server yesterday, chat seems back to normal. The reboot was about 15:30 Pacific Standard Time, or 23:30 UTC on 21 December. Anyone still connected by in-game chat was probably disconnected at that point. The "reconnect" button worked for me, but restarting the client should work in the worst case.
This seems to have been a server-side problem. I don't think it had anything to do with main versus devprev or Windows versus Mac. The differing results were probably just timing. At some points before the reboot, the chat server seemed to be working normally, but then it would stop working again.
At least some external chat clients (such as IceChat in my case) were able to stay connected during this period. These clients just log messages received from the chat server. It's up to the user to interpret the messages. The Foldit client probably looks for specific positive responses to know that it's properly connected and authenticated. The Foldit client could allow access to at least the #global channel if authentication fails, but I think there are more important uses for the developers' time.
I'm closing this feedback.
