I have this problem when the WiFi connection is broken during any attempt to connect to the server: refresh shared solutions, uploading or loading solutions, Open/share solutions …

I use laptops in poor and unstable WiFi conditions (far away from the router) or even on temporary travel with no connection.

So probably this happened for the same reason I couldn't remain connected to chat for some time.
My internets disliking fold.it.

Now, on the same laptop, even if I stay on the same Wifi for several hours (running a recipe), it systematically hang/crashes when trying to share or load.

The only solution: save, close the client, re-open a client, load solution and then share.

I've 2 clients running on this laptop, none of them being the 'chat connected' client.

The WiFi may be stable but not necessarily the internet connection from the WiFi router to the Foldit server. Lost packets may cause the connection to go idle, see this old bug: http://fold.it/portal/node/993031
