Foldit fails to start on my computer using my current setup:
$ ./Foldit
Foldit Error: The game has previously not started up correctly.
If this problem persists, please install the latest version.
freeglut ERROR: Internal error in function fgOpenWindow
X Error of failed request: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)
Major opcode of failed request: 4 (X_DestroyWindow)
Resource id in failed request: 0x0
Serial number of failed request: 30
Current serial number in output stream: 33
The internet suggests a source-code change may help:
– begin quote –
I could solve the problem just by replacing
glutInitDisplayMode (GLUT_SINGLE | GLUT_INDEX);
to
glutInitDisplayMode (GLUT_SINGLE | GLUT_RGBA);
– end quote –
Other information that may be useful:
$ aptitude show freeglut3 | grep Version
Version: 2.6.0-1
$ aptitude show nvidia-glx | grep Version
Version: 285.05.09-1
$ uname -r
3.0.0-2-amd64
It's Debian, that's it. I included version numbers for packages that I thought were relevant, and update frequently (about once every 2-3 days)
I have packages from sid, squeeze, and experimental.
The experimental packages are related to my video card:
aptitude show ~S~i~Aexperimental | grep -e "Package" -e "Version"
Package: nvidia-vdpau-driver
Version: 285.05.09-1
Package: nvidia-kernel-dkms
Version: 285.05.09-1
Package: xserver-xorg-video-nvidia
Version: 285.05.09-1
Package: libgl1-nvidia-glx
Version: 285.05.09-1
Package: libgl1-nvidia-alternatives
Version: 285.05.09-1
Package: nvidia-alternative
Version: 285.05.09-1
Package: nvidia-glx
Version: 285.05.09-1
Package: libglx-nvidia-alternatives
Version: 285.05.09-1
nouveau doesn't work on my computer – it fails to get past the first kernel mode setting (just after booting from grub)
Debian has now updated the nvidia drivers beyond the version I was using in experimental, so I'm back to a "standard" setup:
$ aptitude show ~S~i~Aexperimental
$ uname -r
3.1.0-1-amd64
$ aptitude show nvidia-glx | grep Version
Version: 290.10-1
$ aptitude show freeglut3 | grep Version
Version: 2.6.0-1
And the error still exists:
freeglut ERROR: Internal error in function fgOpenWindow
X Error of failed request: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)
Major opcode of failed request: 4 (X_DestroyWindow)
Resource id in failed request: 0x0
Serial number of failed request: 30
Current serial number in output stream: 33
The Linux Foldit tar file doesn't seem to have changed since I last reported this problem:
$ ls -l ../Foldit.tar.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 bioinf bioinf 60363856 Nov 24 10:44 ../Foldit.tar.gz
$ md5sum ../Foldit.tar.gz
300f3d5bca57e8b2201182ebeefe2258 ../Foldit.tar.gz
$ ls -l ../Foldit.old.tar.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 bioinf bioinf 60363856 Oct 18 16:16 ../Foldit.old.tar.gz
$ md5sum ../Foldit.old.tar.gz
300f3d5bca57e8b2201182ebeefe2258 ../Foldit.old.tar.gz
I have yet to try the updated nouveau drivers.
gringer - I really hope that someone can help with this - it's good to have you back…
And thanks from all of us for the return of gringer_irssi!!!!!
Why do you feel the need to SPAM the Global chat with that truly annoying bot?
I thought we agreed earlier on a no-bot rule?
Are any other bots allowed, or is this one allowed because the mods think it's "cute"? I hope there isn't a double-standard here, with mods playing with favoratism.
Does this have ANY benefit to the game? It totally obfuscates any meaningful dialog ( if there is any).

@ B2 / Brick
As a mod, I am completely unaware of a "no bot" rule. If there is one, kindly put a link here.
Chat is more than proteins. Chat is the heart of the community, where most folders get more than puzzle information - it's a place for people to get to know each other and have some fun, too.
If anyone is unhappy with people having some fun in chat, the answer to that is simple - close the window.
Most of the time, the people who are having a good time in chat are the ones who are interacting with the new folders, and actually answering their questions.
The people who tend to complain about fun in chat are usually those who don't bother saying much of anything in chat, much less helping - mostly they just speak to complain.
Since you felt the need to show an example of what you considered "the need to SPAM the Global chat with that truly annoying bot?" I'll reprint here what you said in global (and to my recollection, all that you've said in global for weeks):
[6:51pm] B2: oh crud - is that bot back again?
[6:51pm] B2: I thjought we had a no-bot rule here
[6:52pm] B2: time for ignore again
[6:52pm] B2: /ifnore gringer_irssi
[6:53pm] B2: that bot is the worst kind of channel pollution
[6:53pm] B2: waste of bandwidth
[6:55pm] B2: go find yourself a dictionary
[6:56pm] B2: like a bunch of 6 year olds witha new toy that talks back
The majority of folders today were delighted with the return of gringer_irssi. The bot is one of the unique & unusual things that make foldit a good place to hang out and enjoy oneself.
If you would like to pursue this conversation further, please open a new feedback so that the player gringer can get the help he needs to get his foldit client running. Also - could you please edit your post so that it doesn't break this page?
I'm sure some people are happy that I don't feel the need to prattle on needlessly in #Global, like others do.
Chat is the heart of FoldIt. If u (Brick) cant see that, just leave it alone.
