Maybe, it will help that somebody can only write into a thread if he has given some details about himself in his profile?
Okay, somebody can give some false details about himself (so he can call himself Santa living at the Northpole), but even creating a profile needs some time.
I do it this way:
If I receive a message in ICQ, and there are no user details in his profile, I don't give an answer and block him.
Because, those people who really want to participate here, and have no evil intentions, won't have have a prob to give some details about themselves, even only a photo or in which country they do live.
Criminals, Trolls and other scoundrels want to be anonymus, right?
…I can't remind of getting an ulocking mail to my Email account, which I had to click to participate in this game and fori.
I suppose, the email-adress is just stored for receiving messages.
This type of spam is probably written by bots. Some spam bots can fill profile information with random information.
Integrating http://recaptcha.net/ might help.
In the forum thread http://fold.it/portal/node/986624 the "players"
AnthonyDaniel http://fold.it/portal/user/127056
andyameed http://fold.it/portal/user/127100 and
reklammicke http://fold.it/portal/user/127433
suggest to run foldit on Windows 7 w/o any problems.
In their profiles you can see that they never played foldit even for a second but use their profiles for spamming only. And @Crashguard303: one of them actually uploaded a profile photo.
I'm not sure why exactly they are doing this but could it be some sort of SEO spam?
got rid of all 3, thanks!
@madde:
They use Photos at now?
Well, what a criminal energy!
What is SEO spam?
If you want a website X to rank higher in Google* search results, you'll need a large number of high-rated websites linking to site X. So the spammer creates an fold.it-account, places a link to site X in his/her profile and writes a comment (with or without links) in an old, buried part of the blog/news section, where no man will ever find it. The Google-robots will find it anyway and - via the automatic link to the profile - they'll also find the link to site X.
or any other search engine
**one of the high-rated websites
**or posts a normal looking - though not very substantial - message somewhere in the brighter parts
Well… kinda clever… in a different way :/
By the way, some new spam here:
