I'm running OpenSUSe 11.4
libGLU.so.1 is installed in the /usr/lib64 directory. But when I try to run Foldit (./Foldit) I get the error: Foldit Error: The game has previously not started up correctly.
If this problem persists, please install the latest version.
Foldit Error: Could not load library: libGLU.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory.
Where does it look for the file? I tried copying it to the Foldit directory - still didn't work.
I am on Fedora and had a similar problem.
You should try to install 32bit version of libGLU.
tried that - didn't seem to help. Maybe I'll try again.

Foldit is 32bit and need all 32bit libraries to work.
I have 64bit Suse linux and installed 32bit support - problem solved.
