Scientists have used ultra-fast X-ray pulses to make a stop-motion "movie" of Green Fluorescent Protein changing state from dark to fluorescent, even capturing an image of it in a half-way state between dark and light. This allowed them to make a mutant version of the protein that works even better than nature's own.
