Mutate Sidechains function

I'm interested in a specific description of what the Mutate Sidechains function does. I see that the backbone is held constant. I suspect that combinitorial explosion precludes trying every possible mutatable sidechain with every other. What algorithm does the function follow - what constraints are applied to the process?
