To prevent Windows from running automatic updates overnight change the settings for updates as follows (this is for Win7 Pro, others may vary):
Start, select Control Panel …
From the Control Panel window select
Windows Update, then Change Settings:
Click on the "Important Updates" drop down menu and select something other than the "recommended" Install automatically (see pic)
