Unable to access group chat using an IRC client

I am unable to access the newly secured group chat using an IRC client (chatzilla).

I am attempting to join the channel using

irc://game.bakerlab.org/mygroupname?key="my irc key"

and the response I get is "you are banned from this channel".

Any suggestions?

last night by admin that being unable to join group_chats using irc clients is forbidden due to security issues.

Hi gla,

The issue is that we want to secure group chats. If anyone can randomly join with an IRC client, then there was not much point to the exercise in the first place.

What you should do is get a second account that you'll use for IRC (say, gla_irc), and join your group with it. Then you will be issued an IRC nick and IRC key that you can use. Once you have identified to NickServ, you will be allowed to join your group chat.

That is to say, group chat is working as designed, newly secure.

Cheers,

If his regular account is a valid group member, why would he be banned if he has the correct key?

He can use his regular account to join, but then he won't be able to use the Foldit client to be in the group chat at the same time. It's just more convenient to use a separate account.

I think you misunderstand something about IRC. No nickserv does, it would be meaningless. Nick clashes are impossible on IRC.

Thanks for your advice - I have set up a second account and it seems to be working now.

Based on the existing acct. I am getting used to this client and all that and I am not in a group just yet but as I see it, making a second account would artificially inflate our user counts while reducing any 'per user' statistics.

So my proposal is that for each acct, there are 'actually' two accounts created, the main one, and one with "_irc" or something to distinguish it. This allows account linking and user 'tracking' without wondering who is who and what is what.

Again, to be clear, on my account page there could be two keys listed, one is for the 'main' account and the second one is for IRC only 'access', which would be my nick_irc. This could also be an 'elected' choice, as well, so we don't have to see two pieces of info that for some of us, don't do anything (I doubt I would EVER need a second irc acct.)

Example:

Profile
Name: Cerberus128

IRC Nick: Cerberus128
IRC key: BLAH_BLAH
IRC2 Nick: Cerberus128_irc
IRC2 key: BLAH_BLAH2
