There's a phrase called a "perfect storm", usually describing an event where a rare combination of circumstances will aggravate a situation drastically. When we discuss our "Great Foldit Outage of 2014" here, we often use this phrase because it fits. So what happened last weekend?
First, there were significant network outages here that likely coincided with an actual storm moving through the Puget Sound area. Next, some technical failures beyond our control took place, including a stuck connection that was delaying all inbound email (if you mailed us, we got your mail – eventually). Because that wasn't messy enough, we simultaneously experienced additional hardware failures here at Foldit Central. All of you demonstrated amazing patience and humor while we fixed what we could and waited on what we could not fix ourselves. Your good spirits made a less than perfect situation a bit brighter for everyone involved and we appreciate it!
Going forward, we’re addressing the variables within our reach to minimize downtime and also making number of tweaks behind the scenes to improve our social media response rate when these things come up so you can get the essential news faster.
Thanks again!
