FoldIt has crashed so often that it is unplayable. If it was stable, I would play it for an hour or two every day and also let it run on my machine in the background all of the time. Please help.

@QuantLeo - are you running Windows 10? There has been a crashing-every-5-minutes problem on Windows 10, which the developers are working to fix. They have released a possible fix in the developer preview version of the software. You can try this version - let us know if it fixes your crashing!

  1. Close the game
  2. Locate your foldit directory
  3. Edit the file options.txt in that directory
  4. change the "update_group" setting in that file from "main" to "devprev"
  5. Save the file
  6. Open the game

Note: this version of the game does not currently have sound.

if using a mac it may prove necessary to use the 'terminal' to do this - else the edit to devprev will not stick.

A bug has been found when using the audio library. They are working on fixing the problem but for now the the only solution is to disable the audio driver on the computer. Look for the comment by bertro on disabling the audio device.

By the way, much of foldit play is interactive. Humans are still better at creating good solutions to these puzzles then computers left unattended. While it's possible to run everything in the background without interaction the results will score poorly and are no different than having a computer attempt solutions on its own. If you plan to primarily let puzzles run without your input you may be more interested in Rosetta@home.

For now you can also use the devprev version which disables audio. See Susume's explanation on how to use devprev. With this method your audio will be available for other applications.

I've passed the issues list over to the devs in hopes we can tackle some of these problems ASAP. :)
