I remember foldit allowing proxy settings back when I started playing in… uhhh… at least five years ago. The feature was quite useful for (sigh) Chinese users like me, who usually faster and more reliable connection through a "VPN". I put VPN in quotes because it's technically not a VPN client acting as a network adapter on the computer, but a client for a specialized protocol that exposes its functionalities as a local proxy (SOCKS5 and HTTP) server.
Without a proxy the game is mostly playable, but puzzle load takes a long time. The worst part comes when the game self-updates. I understand that the game may use network functionalities that cannot be adequately served via the TCP-only HTTP CONNECT protocol, but I hope SOCKS5 might be usable?
Yes, I'm writing this as I'm installing foldit on a new computer and waiting for the update to do its thing.
Eh, the good news is there are tools that make fake network adapters out of a proxy…
