Electron density - viewing

If there is one thing about ED that I hear time and time again it will be "how do I view this?" I'm pretty fed up with this. Not because the question is wrong - but because the tools available are hard to use.

I have argued for an ED eraser for a long time now - like a reverse etch -a-sketch. Something that allows removal of a ED areas that a player does not want to see. I still believe this would be of benefit for many in ED puzzles. But the issue of 'seeing' does not go away - and for many the prob is everything else that they don't want to be able to see whilst working in a specific area.

We already have a 'trim density' option in the ED window…..can we have a 'trim density to selected segments'? This to show the density (as per a distance slider) which also removes all protein outside that same area. This would remove the need for ctrl/alt click shift and drag (and the other similarly painful and slow operations) that have to be used every time a new focus is chosen.

To my mind EDs are a fantastic scientific base that fodit players can work on. I would like to see tools that help us here to interpret what ED can give - tools that will help more players to participate.

Foldit should find ways to help 'players see'. I personally think this is one way.

I think anything that will help players see into the cloud is a good thing. Trim to selected segments is one way to do that. Combined with a slider that stays put on the trim dialog, this could be very helpful.

I'm with you here on this one.

I was thinking of a similar control scheme where you could extract connected bits and pieces away like a surgeon and then reconstruct it once you're done or have to shift thresholds with it intact.

But yeah, removing it with an eraser/brush tool to see what's underneath would be fantastic.
