Yes the group structure can be quite off-putting. I recall that when I joined I was really disappointed at the lack of freedom to learn and share with others and almost feeling forced to join one group or pack, just to get any basic information about how the game worked.
Things have improved a bit since then and of course many great players play solo and do very well. Collegiate isn't a word I would use in the foldit context. It is difficult to measure the competitive value of groups as there is one big one and lots of small ones, my understanding is that the structure enforces diversity in solutions across the groups.
