How to copy solutions locally if the server is down

  • Go to your local foldit installation directory (Foldit_64 for example)
  • find out what the number of the puzzle is in the puzzle directory; you can find out by creating a track in the puzzle with the puzzle name. The directory in the puzzle subtree will have that name. for example:

puzzle 2535;

  • Make a track called 'p2535'.
  • Now check the puzzle directory and open the last modified ones, for example 0002013963.
  • In that directory you should see a subfolder called 'p2535', you then know you have the right internal puzzle number. If this is not the one, try the next directory with a 0002013xxx number and repeat until you have found the correct 0002013xxx directory.
  • Goto the foldit installation directory and locate the files called:
    puzzle_<internal puzzle number from above without the leading zeroes>_time_<some large number>.ir_solution

    Copy those to the machine where you need them. no need to stop the client there, just press ctrl-o to load local solutions and voila.
    This also works when the foldit servers are down or give you the 500 response.

Thanks Bletchley Park, good information.

Just to clarify, the ir_solution file will have a name like this:

puzzle_2013963_time_1731719490.ir_solution

It's found in the Foldit directory, c:\Foldit or c:\Foldit64 or whatever name you gave when you installed the game.

The 2013963 is the puzzle number, and it's also the puzzle's address on fold.it, for example: https://fold.it/puzzles/2013963

I generally just make a new save, then it will be the most recent ir_solution in the Foldit directory. It's always a good to check the puzzle number, however.

One trick on sharing with others is to copy the ir_solution file to your group Discord channel. Group members can then download it their own Foldit directories, and it should appear the next time Open/Share Solutions is opened. (There's no refresh button for the right side of Open/Share Solutions, so you'll need to close it and reopen to see any local changes.)
