Having an IRC PM chat available in game would make getting to know other players outside of a group considerably easier for newer players, and would help remove some clutter from global channel. I've had numerous social conversations with others, while some other people are trying to have bug problem discussions, or other folding related discussions.

Better yet: give each player an extra IRC key to be used for IRC only. IRC for instance. Then you can use your favorite IRC program (I use chatzilla) with easy private channels. Now a lot of players have more than 1 key just for that.
