To better understand my results on CACHE puzzle 2207, I've been making screenshots of various solutions and comparing them. It would be nice to go back into CACHE puzzle 2204 and do the same thing, but my clients don't seem to list puzzle 2204 now. How can I switch back to puzzle 2204?
If you've opened a puzzle on a particular client, you should be able to see that puzzle even after it closes by clicking the "Show expired puzzles" check box on the Science Puzzles screen.
There isn't the possibility to load an expired puzzle on a client which never opened it when the puzzle was active.
There used to be a button on each puzzle's web page that you could press to download the puzzle. I haven't found buttons like this on the new website. Also, I played 2204 on the same clients that now do not list 2204 as an expired puzzle. These clients do still list other expired puzzles, like 2203, however.
You're correct, there's no "download puzzle" button on the new website.
I was able to open 2204 just now, so it is possible. I did have to scroll a bit to find it among the expired puzzles.
Even before the big update, Foldit tended to forget about certain expired puzzles. It's not clear why this happens. I assume it's because a puzzle setup file got deleted, but I wasn't able to confirm that.
Puzzles still have a "node number", like on the old system. Puzzle 2204 is node number 2013471.
You may be able to find the following files in your Foldit directory:
- 0002013471.ir_puzzle
- 0002013471.ir_puzzle.opuzzle_setup
- 0002013471.ir_puzzle.params
- 0002013471.ir_puzzle.owts
- 0002013471.ir_puzzle.opdb
- 0002013471.ir_puzzle.ofilters
With those files present, I'm able to open 2204.
Addtionally, quicksaves, recent best, credit best, and very best get saved in this subdirectory:
In the Foldit directory, you may find timed saves with names like:
- puzzle_2013471_time_1664579249.ir_solution
where the "1664579249" is the time stamp.
All of your shared solutions should also be available, if you succeed in opening the puzzle again.
If you have more than one Foldit directory, you may be able to assemble thoses pieces and open 2204 again.
Thanks Loci. Hopefully they will add a "download puzzle" button to the new website.
I think I found the reason 2207 can't be reopened. For some reason, the system changed the puzzle file (0002013478.ir_puzzle). There are several changes, one of which causes the puzzle to open in "all hands" mode. In effect, you can open the puzzle once, using the old puzzle file, but then the new puzzle file causes it to disappear from the puzzle menu after a restart.
See https://fold.it/forum/bugs/20221003-677257a5d4-win_x64-devprev-reopened-non-all-hands-puzzle-2201-shows-all-hands-menu#post_74679 for details.
We've figured out the "all hands" issue, and there should be a fix coming to devprev within the next couple of days.
In puzzle 2222 (CACHE round 7), we are allowed to load solutions from puzzles 2204 2207 2210 & 2219 (CACHE rounds 1-3 & 6 respectively), so I went through all these puzzles and found some solutions that I wasn't sure got shared with scientists. Most of these I could share with scientists in puzzle 2222, but one from puzzle 2210 gave the message "Unknown enum value for
shared::StandaloneSessionConfig::Phase: AllHands" each time I tried to share it. Also, two from 2204 would not share with scientists and gave "AllHands" messages each time I tried. The client I tried these on had the buildid: 20221101-121c245d5d-win_x64 and the update_group: main.
If the solution was saved from an expired puzzle back when we were having the "All Hands" issue, the saved solution may have garbled information stored internally, which would make it difficult to load now that the issue has been fixed. Solutions saved when the puzzle was open should (ideally) not have that issue.
Attempting to fix this may be a bit fiddly, and given the limited scope of the fix (only applying to solutions saved after the puzzle expired, and only for a limited set of puzzles) is unlikely to be a priority.
