For some reason mutate has a very strong preference for arginine on 801. It gave me 36 args in the mutable area; I changed half to lysine and fused, then ran mutate again, and it promptly changed them all back. For comparison, it gave me only 1 asp and 4 glu. Not a normal looking protein.
I added a comment about this in the puzzle comments. Does seem wrong…. just too many arginines :(
Mutate also penalizes the aromatic side chains too heavily. Mass mutate will not allow a single phenylalanine, tyrosine, or tryptophan in the protein, even if there's a void large enough to easily hold one of these.
Perhaps it's again time to modify the scoring algorithms?
Puzzle 801 closed and replaced with 801b, which doesn't favor arginine so highly. (Although it still discriminates against aromatics.)
