some information about how to get started would be helpful. Does one download something? click on something? It is not obvious.

  1. go to http://fold.it/portal/

  2. Create a user name by clicking on the "Not registered? Click here to register now note in the "user login window.


3. Following registration, open your mail client and confirm your username by responding to the message sent to you from the foldit it system administrator. (Requires clicking on a hot link with the mail message) to confirm and complete registration of your new username. This step is critical because if you fail to respond to the welcome message, you will not be registered with the network and will not be able to play.

4. Click on the appropriate graphic for your operating system in the upper right-hand corner of the webpage, where it says "Download". Note that basic OS requirements are indicated

5. Down load the program and run it to install to your computer. The program is approximately 52 Meg in size, so preferably use a DSL, Cable, or other high-speed connection to download. Dial up will take a long time.

  1. Open the program (once installed) and login to the game using the new username you just registered.

  2. If you are a new player, start by doing the introductory levels, which are designed as a primer to learning foldit's tool set and protein folding process.

  3. Following completion of the introductory levels, you can join competition play, in which you play "head to head" with the bulk of foldit's participants on puzzles considerably more challenging than most of the introductory levels.

  4. Read the science information webpage that is accessible from foldit's web site
