Foldit is using OSS as its sound system. OSS is an older system and isn't often install on modern distros anymore. There is a temporary solution which is to install osspd. osspd simulates OSS and routes it through ALSA/PulseAudio. This
can be added in the readme as something you should install. A more permanent and a better solution would be to switch out the sound system to use something like PulseAudio.
(here's what the error messages look like when you don't have OSS installed)
AL lib: (EE) ALCplaybackOSS_open: Could not open /dev/dsp: No such file or directory
AL lib: (WW) alcSetError: Error generated on device (nil), code 0xa004
AL lib: (WW) ALCplaybackOSS_open: Could not find "Generic Software" in device list
AL lib: (WW) alcSetError: Error generated on device (nil), code 0xa004`
Thanks for explaining that error message and what it is about! I agree that it would be nice to have support for ALSA or PulseAudio.
This doesn't seem to help me, even after restarting the PC. Ubuntu 20.04.1.
Please if you could help me run it. I want to join COVID fight.
Please if you could help me run it
This error should not stop it from running. It just stops the sound from working unless something has changed since I last used it (it's been a bit so its possible). I would check that you aren't seeing other errors that are causing issues
It says "contacting the server to check updates", then "Updating (game will restart)" and then it closes without launching. All within a 2-3 second timespan.
I would either open a new thread and ask about it or go somewhere like on the Discord and ask there about it there
I downloaded it again and now it works. For now.
Hey Mystiquewolf–glad it's good for now. Please feel free to reach out to myself or folks on discord if you need any additional support.
