Xylanase is an enzyme which degrades linear polysaccharides into xylose thus breaking down cellulose. It is found in cellulose digesting bacteria. The degradation of cellulose holds much promise in the field of renewable energy sources. A greater understanding of this system might lead to the discovery new bio-fuels.
