Editing of old content disabled

We are disabling the functionality for editing your own submissions in the forum and feedback tracker. Though this is a useful feature, recently a great deal of old feedback tracker entries have been edited to remove their content. When a features becomes so abused, its potential for harm outweighs its benefits.

Perhaps make it so that entries are only editable for one hour after they are submitted, so that a person has a chance to correct typos, or add notes that they may have missed ? This is done on many forums, and seems to be a good policy.

Another twisted approach to customer service.

Did you investigate the reason why they did it? Perhaps this is a message to the Team about their [the members] impression of futality of posting things there?

I think only a few members did it deliberately. Could not be these members asked not to do so?

And anyway, why could not they delete their own post? It could be a regular feature to delete a thread by the one started it.

Why don't you restore the database from a backup if those posts are so important? But if not, why bother?

Why should everyone suffer because of some member's action or a wrong administrative decision?
Will the next step be shutting down the Feedback section because members' posts are just annoying?

From the description, I thought it reasonable to assume that this was vandalism of compromised accounts. Was someone doing this as some form of protest?

Indeed it would be good to allow editing only for a limited amount of time. I needed a quick measure as the editing was going on while I made the change. Later I will expand on it.

I have little intention of speculating about motives. It happened and it shouldn't have; that's enough. Yes, the affected posts in open cases were restored from the database. The closed ones I left. There is no need to get carried away; of course we won't shut down the feedback tracker.

?? "Get a life"? I'm not the one presuming everyone is aware of the happenings of my own posts…. If that's how you normally treat others here, perhaps they should decide to do something else, you know, just for you.

Ah, excellent book, that. Have you read it?

The kind of policies you refer to with that brief word are ones of the suppression of free thought or the alteration of the established record. The former I'd heartily like to do with troll posts like yours above, here and on the wiki; the latter is the domain of those who delete or edit their own posts, which is why we're posting in this topic, after all.

But we don't engage in any of that, as you know. We just try to pursue science together, developers and players all.

Heh, you're not a troll, Aot. Anyway the new chat server is at foldit-web08.cs.washington.edu. In-game chat also works, as does fold.it/i.
