When will CASP7 points be posted?

Tuesday night the CASP7 puzzles closed and the points and global rankings were posted. Then some of the folders in chat complained that they wanted to work some more. An admin re-opened the puzzles. At that point the posted points and new rankings went away.

Now the pages for the CASP7 puzzles show the scores and within-puzzle rankings, but the points that contribute to global ranking have not been restored. Please go back and credit the points.

In the future, please don't re-open puzzles just because a few people want more time.

Does that mean that the 'favored' groups or users weren't at the top of the heap when the puzzles were closed? Can't have that, now, can we?

Angus, you're being paranoid. When the puzzles in question were closed, AHAP was already at the top of the heap in all but one of them. We didn't need them to be re-opened to win.

As I heard it, the puzzles were reopened to allow one individual folder to upload some solutions that he'd worked on offline. (I'm of two minds about whether this is fair, and I don't have any really strong feelings either way, except that it would get awfully messy if everybody tried to do the same.)

If you're wondering, the folder I'd heard about was formerly a member of AHAP, but he is not anymore. He could easily pass us, for all I know, once his scores are recorded. I'm sorry to see him leave the group, but I would be happy if he set new records in any of the puzzles.

If anything, the re-opening stands to knock us down a notch or two, in favor of an individual folder. I'd think you'd be happy about that.

I think the problem is the lack of definition of when a puzzle closes. If the site says it closes on Tuesday, what time? in what timezone? on Tuesday? That, and the fact that last I heard, on the publicly available chat box, that closing a puzzle is still a rather manual process.

I believe the reason the puzzles reopened was simply due to a difference of opinion between the developer that closed them and the developer that reopened them as to when puzzles should be closed.

Angus, the only reason you don't "have the ear" of anyone is your constant and relentless accusations and generally negative attitude. Just once, please be FOR something. Propose an idea of your own, assert why it is a good idea, and point out how it will help the project. Don't just shoot everyone else down. Start your own thread, with your own idea.

#1 I did not mention AHAP - and I do think it's unfair to re-open puzzles without announcing it on the web site and letting everyone have at least another day to submit. This lets everyone in different time zones have a chance, not just the guy whining about uploading. Why aren't they playing on-line????

#2 I tried asking nice questions about things like puzzle closing procedures, didn't get any answers, so maybe resorting to snotty comments is the only way to get anyone to respond around here. There are loads of questions asked in the forums that no one on the project team has had the courtesy to answer.

There are many questions on the boards here that a higher then average scoring player such as yourself could address. They do not require knowledge of the project team to handle them. In fact many could be better answered by players then programmers. ….so… why have you been neglecting them?

you had better look again.

I've only been in this for two weeks, and have way more (unanswered) questions than I have answers to give.

What is this "it's unfair" thing?

We're here to help science no matter what our abilities are, aren't we?
So being jealous of others because they found better solutions or had slightly more time is a bit pointless.

Let's just have fun while trying to find better ways of folding proteins, and share those techniques to make the project successful.

My request was for the points of the half-dozen CASP7 puzzles to be finalized, posted, and included in the global rankings. The puzzles are closed, the results are available. It should just be a matter of repairing the oversight that resulted from reopening the puzzles and not properly re-closing them.

I was not attempting to start an argument about whether this particular event was fair or not.

So, could we return to my original question, please?

Part of the cause of this issue is the ambiguity of puzzle close times.  We are planning on being more specific about that, and giving close times as well as dates.
