This is a very interesting question (though not a practical one for the foldit developers)
An approach like that of foldit would be very useful in other domains that involve N-P complete packing problems.
For example, in VLSI design, a layout system that included features like wiggle, shake, and pull might be very fruitful at both the library cell level and at the block synthesis level.
