Spam prevention ideas

As an Admin to a web site, I find it annoying and even detrimental to allow random people to join my site for the sole purposes of spam-vertising and/or linking to malicious web sites.

While it's likely impossible to prevent spammers from joining this site, the Foldit team could set some safeguards in place to make sure they never spam their profile, the Feedback section, or the Forum.

I suggest: do not allow anyone to create a profile, post a feedback, or post to the Forum until they have been a member a certain amount of time, and/or until they have accumulated a certain number of global points. It can be a small amount of time or points, to allow real newbie players to establish themselves, but not zero.

Spammers and malicious types want instant gratification, and will move on, rather than being given permission to post.

Thank you, Boots.
This is our plan for the new website (where someone having trouble downloading/running the game will still be able contact us directly… so hopefully we'll be the only ones getting spammed ;)
