This problem began two days ago. I usually upload saves to run scripts in the background when at work. Now 'can't contact server' message appears and 'puzzle closed' message even though there are still 5 days left on symmetry puzzle.

I suspect that the puzzle is, in actual fact, closed. I believe there was a bug discovered in either the puzzle, or the game mechanics. They probably closed the puzzle, so they could fix the bug. If this is the case, there is a chance that they may re-open the puzzle, once the issue has been fixed.
Yes, we had to take this puzzle down due to serious bugs.
