3 players have already made the comment in the announcement that they don't like that the ability to use precise wiggle had been removed. I must agree. Wouldn't the precise wiggle get a higher score? Personally, removing a tool that works better (though not faster) doesn't make much sense. Along those lines, is the new algorithm (labeled as precise) being worked on to be suped up?
I agree: what is the point of removing precise wiggle? Make the less precise wiggle the default if you wish but leave players the choice.
Please see: http://fold.it/portal/node/996208 (specially post #9) for reasons.
Dev: I appreciate that a decision and a choice was made in this instance. And that it goes toward more diversity and the need for less powerful machines to achieve it.
I'm not sure that David Baker's comment should be interpreted to mean that precise wiggle is be avoided: rather that its early use can lead to premature optimization which is a bad thing. It seems a bit like the old Local Wiggle strategy (in the good old days when it worked!): players quickly found out that this was best left to the end. Same with precise wiggle: let's have the ability to use it if desired. Give us the choice!
No longer relevant with the addition of NC, though it brings it's own issues along these lines…
