minimizing Foldit

Can you post your OS version? I haven't been able to reproduce this problem here, and I'm wondering if it's specific to a version of macOS.

Also, can you confirm that you downloaded Foldit from the link on the front page? (And not the 64-bit Mac build that was posted here, and which has some known issues.)

I think this has been a prob for long enough now - can we please have it fixed?

How big an ask can it be for something so basic.

It's embarrassing that it's still an issue.

I have returned. I apologize for my hiatus and the lack of information in this post.

I have 10.13.6 which is High Sierra. But I'm letting you know its been the same problem with every version.

The foldit version I have says it was created and modified on April 2, 2018 at 4:41AM.

I saw this in #veteran today. The "can't minimize" issue seems to be affecting Mac users for sure. It's not clear to me whether Windows is affected in the same way.

If anyone is experiencing this issue, please reply to this feedback with your platform and version. (I've taken the liberty of removing a few of the "bump" messages on this thread which weren't providing any new info.)

Running a GUI recipe is one reason not to minimize. Minimizing a GUI recipe effectively stops the recipe until the window is restored. Lua recipes don't have the same restriction. As far as I know, this GUI recipe limitation is the same on all platforms.

Minimizing a window while a Lua recipe is running means Foldit can skip drawing the protein for the time being. This frees up computer resources for more productive tasks, such as running more Foldit clients.

The terminology may also be a problem. On Windows, "minimize" hides a window, leaving an icon on the taskbar. Clicking on a taskbar icon makes the associated window visible again. The image shows what the controls look like on Windows 10. Bringing a minimized window back to the screen is really "restoring" it.

See Manage windows on Mac for the equivalents. The main difference is that the controls are on the left of the title bar. The Mac "minimize" button is in a yellow circle.

The standard window controls aslso include a "maximize" button, but that controls whether the window occupies the full screen. On Windows, when the control is a single rectangle, you'll see "maximize" if you hover on it, and clicking it makes the window full screen. When the control is two stacked rectangles, the window is already full screen, and you'll see "restore down" if you hover it. "Restore down" just restores the previous window size and position, and is not the same as "minimize".

Here's a an excerpt from today's chat:

11:26 plus, idk if anyone else feels this way, but not being able to minimize the game is a big turn off.
11:27 ???
11:27 like the fact that its such a simple fix yet has persisted this long
11:28 not Windows ?
11:28 doesn't work on my windows 7… but I'm a total tech disaster
11:29 never had a problem minimizing on Windows, in fact it runs faster minimized, uses less resources not having to process the video updates
11:30 I've heard that. but if I minimize it stops running
11:30 oh really? it should run faster
11:31 I stick to hydro view, line and no stubs…leave all options off. I know it should run faster, but on my machine it just stops
11:31 I quit worrying about it 2 years ago I think
11:33 man, is that a windows thing or is it a problem with your computer? that would annoy me
11:35 I hardly play anymore. my rank is in the hundreds
11:35 sad
11:37 Wonder why they cant fix it?
11:37 not a "Windows" thing, since it's worked for ten years on any of my Windows boxes
11:39 https://fold.it/portal/node/2005974
11:41 Not just Windows; MAC doesnt minimize
11:42 do you find it annoying, MIke?
11:47 On a mac, you can right-click on the icon in the dock, and select minimize.
11:52 are you saying hide has the same functionality as minimize?
12:13 I cant NinjaGreg
12:13 I can though shive it off screen

Loci - I'm windows 7. when I minimize the recipe stops and then restarts when I reopen the window. I'm not sure if any of the recipes are GUI – I mostly stuck those in a separate folder and rarely use them after GUI was temporarily not working with a short term update
