Foldit online mode tests

As discussed on the bugs board, I'm having problems with online mode on one system. On two others, it seems to work correctly in Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. The same three browsers have problems on my laptop, which is the newest system of the three.

The main problem is that clicks seem to be off, making the first couple of puzzles very difficult to solve.

It might be helpful to see how the online version runs on other platforms.

Anyone with access to these platforms, please give play.fold.it a try and report back here:

  • Chromebook
  • Mac (Safari browser)
  • Linux (any distro, any browser)
  • Opera browser (any platform)
  • any other browsers/platforms

Any problems should show up in the first puzzle, "Intro to Foldit". If clicks are being mapped correctly, everything works as expected. Otherwise, you'll see a lot of "can't start pull" messages, and clicks won't have the expected effect. You may be able to select a single segment and then use the arrow keys to move the sidechain and solve the puzzle. I've also found that pulling on the carbon just below the oxygen tip of the tyrosine works as expected.

@LociOiling is there anything unique about the monitors/displays of the devices that are experiencing this issue? if mouse events like clicks or drags appear to be happening at .5x or 2x the expected width or height, it could be the result of faulty device pixel ratio logic. maybe i'll add a section to the debug panel that allows you to manually set/reset dpr as a way of fixing weird edge cases that sneak through. thanks again for your help on this one.

Tried with MS Edge on Windows.
The system recognise my default language (FR) and i get everything in French … but very incompletely translated, popu ups in EN etc.
Do you use he default translation on Foldit main itself?
It's a long time I tried to translate it, but lately, it was not obvious what to do to fully translate everything. Not sure my latest translations where taken into account.

Tested, and working on the following system:

  • Firefox (EOL version 136.0.1 64-bit)
  • OS Linux Mint 19.1 Cinnamon.

Machine with 32GB RAM and 20 threads.

Some quick feedback here, not sure if I should move to another thread?

  • Takes some time to load.
  • Save/load solutions works, but I need to save two times before the last one appears in the "load" list. Also, the descriptions are not showing in the "load" dialog after selecting one in the list.

@"Bruno Kestemont" sorry for any confusion on the translation stuff - the web client does not have full feature parity with the downloadable clients yet and I felt it was important to have something there for translation, so I hacked a temporary solution that uses Google's translation API. Nothing happened to the crowdsourced translations and they will be in the web client as well in due time :)

@rosie4loop thank you for the feedback here! Have you noticed that the web client takes significantly longer to load than the downloadable client (excluding download time)? I actually anticipated the loading might be a bit faster because of some optimizations I had made to how Foldit loads in scientific libraries.

Also, Save/Load is still experimental in the web client- it will of course become higher priority as we add in game modes other than Education puzzles.

@LociOiling just wanted to follow up again regarding the intermittent mouse clicking issue- are you still experiencing that? Is there anything of note about the devices/displays on which you experience the issue?

I'll retest, but the problems were happening on a variety of systems. The most stock is a recent Lenovo laptop. Under display settings, it has the "scale" option set to 200% to make things readable on the 3480 x 2160 screen.
