He received his B.S. in chemical engineering from Universidad Nacional de Colombia-Medellin in 2000, where he also received his M.S. in physics in 2003. In 2004, he joined the faculty of Universidad EAFIT as an assistant professor in the Department of Basic Sciences, and in 2007, he went to Oregon State University to work on mitochondrial bioenergetics in aging under the supervision of Dr. Tory Hagen at the Linus Pauling Institue. After receiving his Ph.D. in biochemistry and biophysics in 2013, Dr. Gómez returned to Universidad EAFIT where he is currently professor of biological sciences and also leads the research group on biological sciences and bioprocesses. His main research interest focuses on mitochondrial bioenergetics and cell energy metabolism.
