School classes causing disruption in global chat

It is becoming a frequent occurrence for school classes to be rather disruptive in the global chat. They are becoming increasingly offensive to come people.

You only have one moderator who cannot be present all the time.

I have two suggestions:

  1. A special schools version of the fold.it application that omits global chat and assigns it to a private channel.

  2. Select some of the longer term regular adult members to be given at least chat moderator status; e.g Marie Suchard, CharlieFC, auntdeen, etc.

I agree fully and also saw the comments in the chat - there needs to be a moderator when non adults act up and can give them a needed time out.

The school groups unfortunately seem to have little interest in the game.
It is just a task that they are given to get a credit or whatever.
It would be interesting to know if any ever come back.

I think it would be good to have both of M3's suggestions.

A version especially for schools would be great

  • if it actually interests any of the kids they can easily find the main game out of school.

One moderator obviously isn't going to be able to be on all the time but this is a 24/7 game so having some others available to handle the occasional player who misbehaves in chat would also be good.

I like the idea of a separate chat for the students and empowering some of the regulars.

I also feel it would be good for there to be an established code of conduct for the site. If there was an agreement players could check that they read agree to, participation in certain privelegdes could be established, or revoked, by contract according to specific rules.

I agree that we need more mods. I nominate some of the people I see on all the time: Marie Suchard , mimi, vixynn, rav3n_pl, sandir (my wife), and myself (there are probably others who would also qualify).

I literally gave a 10 year old player a timeout the other day for spamming chat. I couldn't enforce it, but he seemed to shape up a little.

A version of foldit that just did the tutorials with no chat might be good.

Gary has volunteered to update the wiki on the tutorials with better pictures and descriptions. This will help, since we can point to the wiki and say read it.

Ignoring global is the best short option. The content of the recent classes is a little shocking, but spamming and jamming the channel is the most irritating aspect. I would prefer not to have my hardware handicapped even further than it is… But, it does underline the simplest solution - we need to span the time-zones, with a deputy or two.

Looks like we closing to RTFM! :P
But yes, answering to same question(s) zillion times a day is little… annoying.
Upgraded Wiki should help a lot.

Example reason for adding an 'Educational Institution' client with separate channel for the class, so that teachers can control, as well as log the chat for their students…

bareego_IRC: did we have another school class ?
mbaker9: who is this?
MPJYDEN: Another school calss :)
MPJYDEN: Where u from?
anthion: this is global chat for all foldit users
mimi2: yes - same school
mbaker9: oh
mbaker9: im doin this for school to
MooMooMan: Obviously the chat logs need to be posted to the principal.
mimi2: that's fine
anthion: thats great mbaker9
MooMooMan: its a particular group of people that are the problem….
mimi2: we only object when people are rude or racist

bareego_IRC: I think it's a great idea to introduce kids to this, just not the right way… would be a good idea if they had their own chat channel
