Continuous crashing on Windows 10

Audio devices have been disable on my PC and foldit works, although audio is now disabled for ALL apps. Not a very good solution.

When foldit starts a popup error box says "Can't open audio device" so the app does initially check for audio. Audio is disabled throughout the app meaning this should be a trivial bug fix.

No audio device found, disable foldit audio.
No audio desired, disable foldit audio.

I'll probably get flack saying I don't know what I'm talking about. True, I don't have the source code, but instead prove me wrong. Either way I'll have a computer that doesn't crash every 2 minutes :)

I don't think anyone is listening. Until more players have this issue (which may happen in the next few months as win 10 upgrade for free is expiring), they have no impetus to fix this small issue

Unfortunately not all Win 10 computers are affected. My Win 10 desktop has no problem running foldit. Bertro saw some internet comments saying it may be a particular audio chip. If so there may be only a handful of computers with that audio chip, hence no impetus to fix this small issue.

That's a good point, Tom! Don't worry, we're listening - keep in mind that as a small team, we don't have access to all possible win10 setups that may be able to replicate this issue and therefore it takes longer to replicate, pinpoint and fix!

Patient: Doctor, it hurts when I do this.
Doctor: Well, don't do that!

I bring up this old joke because it appears the issue is being over analyzed. Foldit crashes on some computers when the audio library is used. Solution don't use the audio library. Any computer can be used to test whether the audio library is initialized or used.

Those who want to use foldit audio can still turn it on. But this brings up another question. How many veterans still use foldit audio? Would anyone be upset if audio was completely removed from foldit? I asked this question of my group and in veteran chat and no said they use foldit audio.

Inkycatz, thank you for your feedback. Good to know someone is listening.

FoldIt crashes on my Microsoft Surface Pro. That is a mainstream computer. One of the reasons I bought this computer is so I could run Foldit on a tablet since the screen is detachable. Unfortunately it crashes within the first five minutes of use.

I just tried turning off the audio drivers and now, after 10 minutes, it appears to be stable. It is a shame I now have to loose the audio for all my other apps, but I'm glad to be back in the game!

I would love to see this fixed and would not miss the audio one bit. I haven't used the Foldit audio for years & I miss being able to play other music on my computer while Foldit is running.
